And then there were six. Just Tom, Gary, Jeremy, Eddy, Julian and myself entered the May club competition, although we had a few other folk at the ground watching the ‘action’ and eating our biscuits.
The weather was warm and dry but the breeze was variable and fickle, getting more troublesome as the shoot went on.
As we were six, we had the choice of shooting with two shooters per detail, or three, we chose the latter, much to Tom’s disappointment, as he was the one who was going to try and shoot as well as score the cards, in other words, if he wasn’t shooting, he was scoring! So we ended up with Tom, Eddy and myself in the first detail and Gary, Jerry and Julian in the second.
During my first card, the breeze was pretty reasonable and readable using my home made rescue blanket wind flag. When the flag was blowing out to the left, I aimed off to allow for the wind and released my shots. On occasion the wind dropped or changed direction slightly, so I would hold off, as with 20 minutes for the card, I had plenty of time. This seemed to work well enough and I was happy with the way I had shot.
Gary had an excellent first card, at the end of which he had scored 250! The first in a club competition this year!
Card two, different bench, different wind. The breeze was not strong, but it was moving about more and so I had to really concentrate on my wind flag and only release a shot when I thought I knew how the pellet was going to react. Let’s just say, I still have much to learn.
Last card and to borrow Tom’s words “it’s bonkers out there” and it was. The breeze had become extremely fickle and my flag was blowing left at times, right at others and just sitting there taunting me every time I thought I had got the hang of things. While the other detail were shooting, I saw all three of Gary’s windicators pointing in different directions and at one point, one of them rotated 360 degrees.
Overall it was another excellent shoot, that was fun, laid back but deadly competitive all at the same time.
Scores were 1st: Tom 742 40x. 2nd: Gary 726 25x. 3rd: Me 722 21x. 4th: Julian 721 16x 5th: Jeremy 711 19x. 6th: Eddy 704 12x. Next round is on June 20th. 9.00 am start.
