East Devon BR – 21/3/26

Ten competitors signed on for Round 3 of the ED summer BR league and the sun shone, a welcome change after the winter we have just enjoyed.

I found myself in the first detail again and for my first card, the breeze was relatively steady and predictable. What wasn’t possible to read was whether the air between me and my card was warming, giving the pellet a little lift, or cooler, allowing it to drop slightly. After we had shot, it was clear that Tom and Phil, either side of me had ‘enjoyed’ the same thing, both talking about mysterious high and low shots.

There were a further three details before I was due back at the bench and right from the start Tom, handling all the scores, said it was a very close match.

The breeze for my next card was fickle, changing strength and direction constantly. As soon as I had taken a few sighter shots and established a probable point of aim, the breeze would change and everything learned went out the window. I was happy with some shots, less so with others, but it seems we were all in the same boat.

So, time for my last card, shot from the dreaded Bench 3. Again, a fickle breeze, again a POA that produced two X’s in a row was then followed by an eight! I really do need to hone my wind reading skills, they are fine in stronger breezes, but utterly useless on days like today.

Looking around the clubhouse at rifles and scopes, it is clear that the relatively humble HFT500, either in standard or BR stock really is a popular and successful choice. Scopes are a little more variable but Falcon’s are much in evidence, nice straightforward, functions kit.

With all cards shot and scored (thank you Tom), it was time for the scores, which Tom again emphasised, were all very close.
