Our penultimate round attracted eighteen hardy competitors, actually there was a nineteenth person present – Amy. She arrived in the form of the Met Office’s first named storm of the 2025 -26 season – and brought with her some rather challenging weather – 25 mph winds and 50 mph gusts – plus thunder, lightning, and rain, for good measure. Consequently, we weren’t expecting to record any high scores. The best results came from the first set of cards – just four shooters scraped into the low 240’s. The total scores were also predictably low; Mike Smith was today’s winner with very respectable 715:17x. Simon and Rob each produced an identical 707:13x, so it was necessary to employ the ‘countback rule’. Simon was awarded second place, Rob third.Today’s averages were – 231, 223, and 226. We welcomed two new participants, Teresa and Paul. They both seemed to enjoy the experience, despite the extremely difficult weather conditions, hopefully they will be joining us again next month for our final round of the year.
Three Dartmoor members attended the recent BRUK match held at Duchy. We learned quite a lot about the way these ‘BRUK Tour’ events are organised. We were particularly impressed with the method employed for scoring cards – this uses a high magnification camera, mounted on a cantilever arm. It has a built-in light source, and the image of the standard .223 gauge is displayed on a laptop or tablet. Today’s cards were scored using this equipment – we found it to be far more convenient than squinting through a loupe, and the resulting decisions rarely needed a second opinion.
Some of Dartmoor’s springer users have been running a parallel benchrest competition over the summer, usually around six members have been taking part. And although the scores are generally lower, (600 – 650) everyone had a good time – including one or two who were experiencing competitive shooting for the first time. Dave Taylor was this year’s overall winner.
