The second round of our club BR league was very well attended once again, seventeen of us enjoyed a closely fought competition resulting in some very good scores and excellent consistency. A trio of 248’s deservedly placed Mike Foster at the top of the leaderboard, but no less than eleven of our shooters achieved totals in excess of 730.The easterly wind was pretty frisky throughout the day, but a combination of our willow hedge and fine mesh netting reduced its intensity to a manageable level – I found myself holding off at eight o’clock on the nine ring for much of the time. The trees behind the target frames did give a useful indication of the regular stronger gusts – but fortunately these didn’t last too long, most competitors were able to complete a card in under fifteen minutes.With so many good scores being recorded there has been a certain amount of rifle substitution and pellet changing in evidence recently. Finding the optimum pellet for a particular barrel can be a lengthy and frustrating process, but with scores often separated by a single point or an ‘X’ it is well worth taking the trouble to test as many batches as possible. A change of pellet can produce a far greater improvement than a change of rifle, scope, or rest system – and a lot cheaper too!
