Once again, we were six.
Here we are in June already and six of us arrived bright and early at the club; organiser
Tom, Gary, Jeremy, Eddy and myself were joined once again by Justin, sadly missing from
the last couple of rounds. Julian was absent, having travelled to Spain for a bit of
sunshine…. Erm, not seen this weeks local forecast then Julian?
The weather was warm rather than the furnace like conditions forecast. The breeze was
extremely light at 5 to 6 mph and at the start of the comp it was a bit all over the place,
making wind flags worth their weight in pellets. As the morning went on the breeze got a
little stronger and at times predictable, something Tom took complete advantage of.
Two details of three shooters were picked out of the hat… actually a 3D printed box and
so we started with Tom, Justin and Jeremy ready to go a little before 9.30. And this after a
little drama. Gary was filling his HFT500 with air when a seal somewhere deep inside
decided to give up the ghost. This resulted in an awful lot of hissing as all the air recently
put into the air tube decided it wasn’t going to stay there. In a delightful display of
sportsmanship, Gary was offered spare rifles and rests by his fellow competitors, in the
end using Justin’s spare rifle and his rest.
Shooting in the second detail with Gary and Eddy, my first card, was shot in a very light
breeze, but one which had ample ability to fool me into pointing the rifle at the wrong spot
on the diagram. On more than one occasion my sighters suggested that the pellet would
rise to the right, when instead it landed spot on the centre of the crosshairs… DOH!
There were the usual happy and not so happy noises coming from fellow competitors at
the end of the first pair of details. Time for card 2.
Once again, different bench, different wind and keen observation of flags, paddles and
pointers was necessary in order to not be done over by the merest hint of a breeze that
actually had better powers of persuasion over my pellets flight than an outside observer
would have believed possible. Still another steady card with a few more 9’s than I would
have liked. More mutters, mumbles and happy sounds from the other shooters.
Last detail and as I was watching the guys shoot, I noticed that Tom’s paddle appeared to
be broken as it was stuck in one place and not moving a millimetre. Obviously Tom had
spotted the same thing and backed up that observation by consulting his other wind
flags… none were moving and all pointing to the left. Tom is a highly considered shooter
and takes his time… not this card, he said he fed pellets into his HFT500 as quickly as he
could and was rewarded with a 250, albeit a little light on X’s, his words, not mine.
I didn’t enjoy the same conditions during my detail, the breeze changing speed, moving
about a little more and changing direction completely during the detail, so again I had a
few random 9’s, much like the two previous cards.
And so with the third detail complete it was time for the scores. As ever the competition
was hot as many of us were after one of Tom’s 3D printed pellets.
Scores were 1st: Tom 747 42x. 2nd: Me 734 14x. 3rd: Justin 731 29x. 4th: Gary 731 22x
5th: Eddy 719 15x. 6th: Jeremy 714 15x.
Again another excellent shoot, the weather conditions helping as warmer is always more
pleasant. It would be great to see a few more club members giving BR a go. It really is
easier than you think / not nearly as easy as you think.
Next round is on July 18th. 9.00 am start
