Seven smiling faces turned up on a lovely sunny morning for Round 4 of the East Devon
FTC BR championship. Tom hung on until 9.15am just in case a latecomer or two might
swell our ranks, but then it was time to get going.
As luck would have it, I ended up with the number one place, so that was bench one in
the first detail of the day, along with Tom and Eddy. The breeze was very light, but never
the less full attention had to be paid to conditions in order to avoid the dreaded high or
low pellet.
I have recently invested in a heavyweight drum stool, which cost less that £100 on eBay
and means I only have to set the height once and I am comfy for the entire shoot, if not
the whole championship. I have also invested a little time and absolutely no money in
making a simple wind flag using a cheap photographic light stand tripod, a short length of
wire and a foot long length of emergency blanket material a couple of inches wide, this
proved its worth today, as by paying close attention (but not close enough at times) to the
length of moving silver foil, I was able to at least have half a clue to the direction of the
breeze and its strength, or lack thereof!
Gary, Fin and Jeremy were on the second detail and came off complaining that they were
having to aim way off the ten in order to get the pellets to land somewhere near to where
they wanted them. Gary was complaining the loudest, but his round two score suggested
there was some gamesmanship going on. Poor Julian ended up with the range to himself
and being the quiet type that he is, gave no clues to what he thought of the conditions or
his score.
The breeze changed throughout the day both in strength and at times direction, both Tom
and Gary were unfortunate not to get an elusive 250 with Gary getting close on his
second card and Tom oh so close on cards two and three. Next time guys.
Looking across the scores for the day, there is a lot of consistency from all shooters card
to card. Of course we would all like to score higher, but consistency is key and as each of
us improve, our scores will go up.
So another excellent days shooting and massive thanks to Tom and Gary for running the
details and to Tom for organising and scoring…. again.
Scores were 1st: Tom 742 36x. 2nd: Gary 734 21x. 3rd: Me 720 20x. 4th: Jeremy 717 21x.
5th: Eddy 715 12x. 6th: Julian 714 16x. 7th: Fin 703 13x
Next round is not far away on May 9th. 9.00 am start
